Synopsis

Review

Director HWANG Yun has proven herself to be an elegant storyteller with her previous documentary films. Now from the perspective of ¡®a mother raising her child¡¯, she contemplates what to feed her son. Torn between the horrors of the nationwide slaughter of pigs due to the foot-and-mouth outbreak and the lure of delicious port cutlets, she sets off to find pigs. The story largely takes place in three different places; the factory farm where products (pork) for human needs are turned out as if from a machine, the free range farm that operates under the philosophy of ¡®putting pigs first¡¯, providing them with organic feed, comfort and protection, and lastly the director¡¯s home where there is a growing concern over eating pork. These three places are all connected to one another under the film¡¯s key word ¡®mother¡¯. The film argues that pigs and human beings are essentially equal living things that both give birth to life and experience maternal feelings of love and pain. The director presents us with some interesting stories related to pigs and makes a personal choice about eating meat. What is particularly worthy of note is her dilemma over what choices she should give to those around her, especially her young child. The three places – the factory farm, the free range farm and the director¡¯s home – all strangely resemble one another, and none is free from dilemmas. (OH Jung-hun)
