Synopsis

The visual shows the alternation of the shots of fireworks filmed at a summer festival in Japan, producing a distinctive yet organic rhythm, as well as a gap in time between the visual and sound, both of which are produced by the photographic images on the 16mm filmstrip.

Review

Nishikawa Tomonari's Light, Noise, Smoke, and Light, Noise, Smoke is a mesmerizing montage of Japanese summer festival fireworks captured on 16mm film. The experimental artist treats these pyrotechnics as pure phantoms, models of perfect and unbridled art. In a unique approach, Nishikawa separates the sound strips from the 16mm film, transforming the visuals into a fantastical landscape. True to its title, the film evolves from recording light and noise performances to a visual metamorphosis. Nishikawa's handmade filmmaking technique explores light and darkness through repetition and variation. The parade of light, noise, and smoke generated by the fireworks elevates the geometric consequences of the landscape to the attributes of visual art. The film's rhythmic pulse, movement, and explosive trajectories demonstrate an ideal marriage of two light-utilizing arts: film and painting. Through repetition and variation, Nishikawa creates a hypnotic visual symphony.
