Unfolding is an experimental video set in 2070, exploring nature and humanity through an absurd wellness session titled 'Guided By Nature.' A futuristic figure follows instructions from an off-screen narrator, who is eventually revealed as the personification of air. The session, initially harmonious, turns unsettling as the narrator expresses frustration, highlighting humanity's precarious relationship with nature.
Unfolding presents a scene from 2070, where a woman adorned in gold glitter participates in a VR yoga session. Guided by an off-screen voice, she performs 'sun safe salutations', 'rising flows', and 'happy baby pose'. These movements, traditionally meant to connect with the sun, sky, and earth, are starkly juxtaposed against a world where nature exists only in images. Directors Anne Fehres and Luke Conroy craft a dystopian vision of a post-climate crisis world in which humanity's interaction with nature has ceased. In this future, the healthcare industry dominates daily life, relegating humans to passive roles, compelled to follow the directives of programmed machines. Leveraging generative AI, the filmmakers blend virtual reality with the rough edges commercial advertisement imagery to create an absurd future. This world starkly portrays the consequences of our deepening disconnection from nature and the environment.
