Synopsis
일곱 살 때 고향인 황해도 신천을 떠난 이후 꼭 한번 밟고 싶었던 북한에서 영화를 만들고 싶었던 나를 격려해준 것은 남편이었다. 남편이 세상을 뜬 후 한동안 상실감에 빠졌던 나는 다시 한번 집을 찾는 심정으로 북한 방문을 준비한다. 2013년과 2014년 두 차례에 걸쳐 북한을 방문한 나는 북한 주민들과의 만남을 통해 그들의 삶을 들여다본다.

동학의 중심사상인 인내천(人乃天), 즉 '사람들이 하늘이다'라는 주제의 이 영화는 남북한 분단 현실을 다룬다. 북한은 한국 사람들에게는 출입이 허락되지 않는 특별한 나라로 물리적으로 가깝고도 심리적으로 이념적으로는 가장 대척점에 위치한 나라이다. 감독은 황해도 신천출신으로 전쟁 이후 남한으로 피난 내려와 성장했고 미국인이란 이중적인 정체성으로 남북을 드나들며 주민들을 조명할 수 있었다. 감독은 양쪽 국가의 주민들이 기억하는 일제강점과 해방, 한국전쟁과 분단 경험, 그리고 통일에 대한 의견을 통해 역사 속에 구성된 사람들의 감정을 들여다보고자 했다. 또한 한국을 연구해온 저명한 한국학자들로부터 분단의 심리적인 현상을 객관적으로 접근한다. 남한주민들을 만날 때는 한국인으로, 북한주민들을 만날 때는 북한출신임을 강조하며 때로는 세대 공감으로, 여성의 경험으로 거리에서 만난 일반인들로부터 즉흥적인 인터뷰를 끌어낸다. 일상적인 질문에서부터 분단을 둘러싼 날카롭고 예민한 질문을 던진다. 국내외 전문가들에게 한국분단의 책임이 누구에게 있는가? 남북의 주민들에게도 묻는다. 전쟁을 어떻게 기억하는가? 통일을 원하는가? 때로는 미국인의 관점에서 접근한다. 미국은 어떤 인상인가? 감독이 밝힌 남북주민 간의 증오와 북한사람들의 미국(인)에 대한 증오는 전쟁에서 일어났던 학살과 피해 경험으로 인해 어두운 그림자를 드리우고 있다. 한편으로 평양의 봉수교회, 묘향산의 보현사를 통해 평화를 기원하는 마음은 남북 뿐 아니라 세상이 별 다르지 않음을 드러낸다. 고향은 물리적인 장소가 아니라 같은 마음이 모인 곳, 그래서 사람들의 마음이 곧 하늘이라는 것이다. It connects two ideas: the search for home, and the nature of ordinary people, while exploring the evolution of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPR K) in relation to the Republic of Korea (ROK) and the USA. There is little real information about North Korea (DPRK) available in the West, and most of it is agenda driven, often focused on three “monsters:” Kim Il Sung, Kim Jong II, and Kim Jong Un and the North's human rights violations as the “worst” in the world. Most of the extant works are based on interviews with “defectors,” food refugees, and illegal émigrés. I based my film on the people who have remained in DPRK, placed in the historical and political context of the20th and 21st centuries, using my experiences as a narrative arc. If this film achieves nothing, I would be happy if it shows viewers that there are people living in North Korea, people just like you and me with dreams and hopes for the better future.
