Jean-Michel FRODON

Journalist and film critic at weekly ¡ºLe Point¡»(1983-1990), ¡ºLe Monde¡»(1990-2003). Editorial Director of ¡ºCahiers du cinema¡»(2003-2009). Since 2010, critic at Slate.fr. Professor at Political Sciences Institute. Author or editor of many books, including ¡ºHou Hsiao-hsien¡», ¡ºConversation avec Woody Allen¡», ¡ºRobert Bresson¡», ¡ºLe Cin?ma d¡¯Edward Yang¡», ¡ºLe Monde de Jia Zhangke¡», ¡ºLa Critique de cin?ma¡», ¡ºAmos Gitai Gen?ses¡».

Yoo Unseong

Film Critic. He majored in physics and education at the Seoul National University. After graduation, he worked at an advertising company, and then started writing as a film critic in ¡ºCINE 21¡». He was the programmer of the Jeonju International Film Festival(2004-2012) and the program director of the Moonji Cultural Institute SAII(2012-2014). In 2016, he launched ¡ºOKULO¡», a journal of cinema and the moving image, as a co-publisher.

LEE Chia-hua

He was born in 1978 in Taipei. Graduating from Doctoral Program in Art Creation and Theory of Tainan National College of Arts. He works as an independent documentary filmmaker for years and now he is also the assistant professor of Chaoyang University of Techology. His The Spirit of 8(2003) won the Special Mention at the Yamagata and Best Documentary at the Taipei Film Festival.

Teddy Grouya

He is currently the Director of the American Documentary Film Festival and Film Fund (AmDocs). After graduating from UCLA, he received an M.A. from the Australian National University in International Relations. Today, he is directing several film and television programs including a travel gastronomic series, a feature film, and a surf adventure project benefitting developing nation communities.

CHO Hyeyoung

Programmer at the International Women¡¯s Film Festival in Seoul. Doctor of Film Studies. She translated Woman film: Screen across borders, Documentary: the Edge of Reality, Deviation(co-author),and worte Today¡¯s Korean Documentary, Girls: K-pop, Square, Screen, and Perpetrator as a Witness in Waltz with Bashir, Armadillo, and The Act of Killing(thesis). She has also worked as a producer on documentary 3 ¡¿ FTM (2008).

Kim Eungsu

¡°Bron in 1966. He studied psychology at Seoul National University. He directed many features and documentary films including Time lasts(1966), Desire(2002), Way to Go Rose(2004), Heavenly Path(2006), The Past is a Strange Country(2007), The Origin of Water(2007), Without Father(2012), The City in the Water(2014), The Journey to Okju(2016), Wookyung(2017), Oh, Love(2017), and The Real(2017) ¡±

Korean Competition

LEE Seungmin

A documentary researcher and critic. She studied documentary at University of York in Canada and got her PhD at the graduate school of Advanced Imaging Science, Multimedia & Film Chungang University. She published many papers and books on documentary films. Currently, she is a visiting professor at Yongin University and lecturing at Korean National University of Arts, Chungang University and Yonsei University.

HATA Ayumi

She has been educated in the UK and Japan in the field of documentary culture and theory, with particular interests in Japanese and Asian film history. After working at universities in Nagoya as part time lecturer, she joined Yamagata International Documentary Film Festival in 2011 and has worked as a coordinator for its International Competition section since then. She is also responsible for YIDFF 311 Documentary Film Archive project.

Stefano KNUCHEL

He was born in Locarno, 1966. In 1998, he starts working as film critic. In 2004 he founds the production company ¡®Venus and beyond¡¯ and directs his first feature documentary Knock Out presented in competition at the Locarno Film Festiva. In 2009 his documentary Hugo in Africa is selected for the Orizzonti competition at Venezia and wins the Critics Award Bisato d¡¯oro for Best Director. Since 2012 he is the Head of the Locarno Filmmakers Academy.

Special Award

AHN Hae-ryong

Photographer, documentarist, curator and publisher, he is making works by crossing text and image. Since 1995, he has been working on photographs and films of the victims of Japanese comfort women in Korea, China, and Japan. Currently, he is working on the themes of Korean residents¡¯ immigrant history and Japanese war ruins related to Korean. He directed My Heart Is Not Broken (2007) and Diving Bell (2014).

Nagyong Choi

Beginning his career as a filmmaking staff in 1995, he works as an art film house director and film producer. He produced the documentary Our President (2017). As a film producer interested in a theme of scapegoats of history, he is preparing a feature film about the Prince of the Joseon Dynasty who tried to create a new world but failed and a documentary film about the separation and meeting of young people of North and South Korea.

LEE Hyunjung

She studied theology and mythology at Ewha Womans University. Her first documentary Virgin Forest (2012) with reflection on Korean myths and femininity was invited to several international film festivals. Echo of Dragon (2013) approaches the dragon, an important symbol in the myths of East and West, from the contemporary perspective. Night Song (2016) was invited to the US Cin?quest Film Festival and Uruguay Film Festival.
