Koreans have long sought their identity through food. Despite rapid economic growth and modernization, there has been a persistent yearning for what is considered truly "Korean." This film reflects on the desires and aspirations of the Korean people, as mirrored in their tastes, from the era of chronic post-war hunger to the global rise of K-food.
The Cooking of Korea was a culinary show featuring traditional Korean cuisine, hosted by culinary researcher Ha Seon-jeong alongside a foreign female presenter. This episode, seemingly broadcast for an international audience, spotlights "Sinseollo," a dish with royal heritage. As Ha Seon-jeong introduces the metal Sinseollo pot, she notes, "In the past, this was a dish enjoyed by Joseon dynasty kings, but nowadays, it's made in every household." The co-host adds, "In the old days, they used charcoal in the center to cook the dish, but now, this is Modern Korea," as she plugs in an electric Sinseollo pot. The show employs parallel montage to juxtapose traditional and modern cooking methods, seamlessly transitioning between past and present. Producer Youm Jisun's Making of Korean Food explores the consistent theme of Modern Korea by examining the transformation of food culture as a reflection of modernity. The show prompts viewers to consider how food, a cornerstone of national identity, mirrors our lives. If we accept the hypothesis that "Korean cuisine embodies the essence of being Korean," then Sinseollo exemplifies this concept, with its diverse ingredients simmering together in a single pot. Upon tasting the finished dish, the foreign presenter remarks, "This is delicious. I've never seen anything like this in America." This admiration from a Western perspective seems to foreshadow the global rise of Korean cuisine decades later.
