exergue - on documenta 14 is a 14-hour documentary chronicling the planning and execution of Documenta 14 in Kassel, Germany in 2017. The film explores the artistic, institutional, and practical issues surrounding this significant event. The film covers Polish curator Adam Szymczyk's (former Artistic Director of Art Basel) unconventional proposal to split Documenta 14 between Athens and Kassel, with Athens hosting first. It deals with the curatorship, public support, history, and context of the biennial, as well as the institutional and capital issues surrounding it. Szymczyk and his team provide an insider's perspective on Documenta 14, which faced controversy over its decentralized organization and financial losses despite public success. The ambitious vision to expand the documenta space to two locations aimed to explore institutional boundaries and challenge Eurocentric models of art production. The documentary shrewdly illustrates the backlash from various stakeholders, logistical challenges, financial deficits, and media scandals. It also explores debates about the artistic value and content of large-scale exhibitions. Through the passion of its organizers, the beauty and power of the art, and unprecedented intimacy, the film draws audiences into the dramatic behind-the-scenes story of Documenta 14, questioning the function of contemporary art. Following its Berlin International Film Festival premiere, the film will be screened at various venues, including the Nam June Paik Art Center in Yongin and the Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art in Ansan during the DMZ International Documentary Film Festival.
