Synopsis

I once operated a small gallery in Euljiro, but it fell victim to redevelopment plans. Now, the space exists in a limbo—neither demolished nor developed, a ghostly reminder of what once was. My friend's graduation artwork still resides there, though I've lacked the courage to face it. Unexpectedly, I receive a letter from Hana Hoogedeure, an online friend I've never met in person. This correspondence becomes the catalyst for action. Camera in hand, I set out to visit the gallery, intent on explaining the situation to Hana. As I approach, the reality of the building's precarious state becomes clear—it's on the verge of collapse. A race against time begins. Can I rescue the paintings and navigate this crisis before it's too late?

Review

Something Lasts Forever follows artist Hyerim and her two friends who once navigated a collaborative life in Euljiro, centered around their gallery. Facing eviction due to gentrification, they perform a poignant ritual to honor the space shaped by their shared experiences and time. This film is a meditation on storytelling through a unique lens, serving as a visual assemblage that explores identity, territory, art, and the fluidity of time. It's a tribute to friendship, perseverance, and solidarity, with a narrative carefully woven from diverse audiovisual materials, staged settings, and performative artistic activities. Blending introspection with playfulness, the film celebrates the things that have endured under adversity and searches for the object of 'eternity' referred in the title. By questioning the meaning of persistence, it innovatively uses diverse media to transform stagnant emotions and preserve fleeting memories.

Director

  • SUH Hyerim

When confronted with seemingly unsolvable real-world problems, the director finds creative inspiration. In these moments, she becomes both filmmaker and protagonist, using the camera to immerse herself in the situation. She has a particular fondness for capturing spontaneous and seemingly trivial events that unfold in these settings. Born in 1985, the director lives in Seoul with her cat, Godot. Her directorial debut documentary, We Are Going to Make Some Kind of Music(2020), was featured at the Twinkle Documentary Festival.
