Synopsis

The Axis of Big Data explores the surroundings of a big data centre in the mountains of Guizhou. Rather than placing the data centre itself at the forefront, the film delicately weaves through the mountainous terrain that cradles the facility. It captures the essence of the landscape, showcasing the diverse tapestry of life activities occurring in proximity and beyond.

Review

Chinese visual artist Zhou Tao has made a name for himself with a series of long, static images of surreal landscapes where man and nature intersect. In The Axis of Big Data, Zhou expands on his themes by experimenting with shots of continuous motion. The film opens with a milky white background, revealed to be a server in a data center as the camera slowly pans left. Shot inside a data center in Guizhou Province, China, the camera looks out the window. In the adjacent field, a sharp digital zoom lens focuses on a solitary elderly worker, a pair of chickens, and a goat. The camera showcases a smooth movement mechanism with imperceptible seams, though Zhou doesn't strive to create the illusion of a single, unbroken shot. The long-lens shooting technique often renders grass and water as purely colored blurs, with panning connecting the different images. Weather changes from clear to foggy, unifying diverse shots. Beyond the discontinuity of night and day and weather, smaller details emerge. A black speck in the lens changes position on the screen from shot to shot, suggesting images captured at different times. In this seamlessly integrated and original work, the camera's continuous movement explores today's world, where pre-modern and ultra-modern elements coexist. Zhou creates a tapestry of landscapes that fuse objects existing in the same environment yet appearing disparate, offering a unique perspective on our complex reality.
