Synopsis
If people would offer anything they have to one another, not only for fellow human beings but also for nature, the earth will become a heaven on the earth. If people would pay respect to invisible forces residing in everywhere, that place would become prosperous, peaceful, and harmonious. I gave offering, seven paper boats to Imjin River. Many children’s lives were lost in North Korea during mass famine from late 1990s and aftermath tragedies. I prayed that those ships would carry as many children’s lost lives to after life plane as possible.
Review
This video is a recording of the performance work performed by artist Soni Kum at the Imjin River in 2015. In addition to the video work introduced in this special exhibition, she has been expanding the world of her works through various performance works. Among her works, Offering, Sever Boats is the most closely related to the DMZ International Documentary Film Festival. In the river flowing through both South and North Korea, the artist launched seven boats for the souls of thousands of North Korean children who died of starvation in the 1990s. The exhibition scene in Berlin that follows, shows how she expands her performance in the direct space of the division of South and North Korea through her own body.
