"Life out of balance": that's what the North American Hopi express with the word koyaanisqatsi. Created between 1975 and 1982, the film is an apocalyptic vision of the collision of two different worlds¡ªurban life and technology versus the environment. Using repetition and acceleration, the film shows the endless traffic flow and assembly lines and the seemingly self-organizing chaos of human life.
The unfamiliar word ¡®Koyaanisqatsi¡¯ means ¡®unbalanced life¡¯. As we develop our civilizations for the sake of convenience, nature gets damaged and destroyed in the process. What impact does this have on human life? I¡¯ve looked for answers to this question in this film. The fact that we¡¯re caught in our own trap – isn¡¯t that a mark of unbalance human life? There is no narration in this documentary. Nevertheless, we can certainly feel the deep echo if the soul through the music and images. In particular, the film has made me realize that the montage editing techniques intended by the director and scriptwriter can be used to create an emphasis, and that this is an advantage and charm of filmmaking. It gave me new insight as a media artist. I¡¯d like to watch Koyaanisqatsi with the audience, a film that explores our unbalanced life.
