The schutterij was originally a sort of citizen militia active during the medieval times and the early days of the modern period in the Netherlands. Rembrandt’s famous painting The Night Watch is a depiction of the schutterij. Nowadays, the schutterij serves as a sort of ‘social club’ within a local community. Unlike his peers who prefer other hobbies, 13-year-old Andy has made the schutterji an important part of his life. Without new, young members, the schutterji in his neighborhood will shut down soon. Andy promises his mother and grandfather that he will recruit new members and continue the tradition, and does his best to keep his word. For those unfamiliar with the schutterji or the history of the Netherlands, Andy’s desperate sense of responsibility and deep dedication may seem bewildering at first.
