The film shows three refugees living in a refugee camp who get their hair cut and beards trimmed. We follow their journey as they make themselves clean and neat. Meanwhile, their voiceover narration calmly relates stories about how they have become refugees and how they feel. We hear about the sorrow and anxiety they felt when they had to leave their home country and family behind, and the desperate situation that drove them to escape on a boat. The miserable reality draws a sharp contrast to their calm facial expressions. The broken mirror in their hands seems to signify their struggle to catch a glimpse of themselves cleaned up. The refugee camp in the French port city of Calais where they reside used to welcome thousands of refugees from Africa and the Middle East, and was once considered a symbol of the European refugee crisis. Although it was dismantled in 2016 after the French government had forcibly moved its residents, there are still more than a thousand refugees living there and volunteers helping them. [LIM Seaeun]
