Mikhail Gorbachev was the eighth and last leader of the Soviet Union. He led the Soviet Union into a new era by negotiating far-reaching nuclear arms reductions with the United States. In so doing, he was the main force in ending the Cold War peacefully, which then resulted in a united Germany and a united Europe. Fast-forward to 2017, and the world stands again at disunity, the brink of a new Cold War. How did we get here?
The Arrow of Time is a documentary that recalls the post-Cold War period and prospects the New Cold War. It starts with the atomic bombing of Hiroshima that ended the WW¥±. It focuses on Gorbachev, a politician who ceased nuclear horror and opened a thawing epoch. He advocated perestroika and dissolved the Communist, but the greatest deed was drastic nuclear disarmament with the US. 30 years after the Cold War, the film comments on the new tension between Eurasia and the tip of Pacific Rim by showing serious interviewees, grim music and overall images of the 20th century war. Most interviewees are sly politicians from the 20th century. Doubt lies that the film only approaches from Cold War¡¯s perspective. Instead if focusing on the possibility of the post-Cold War period, it recalls the existing nuclear terror and utilizes the angst of war. Gorbachev's message, negotiation and patience are critical, even sounds naive. The film follows the typical military documentary format. What left is the audience to decide whether the intention of the work is a reflexive diagnosis, or a recycling of fear. [SONG Hyojeong]
