Synopsis

A group of filmmakers pay a visit to the Red House, a famous haunted house in Philippines. Hoping to find ghosts, they discover the true horror surrounding the house—a garrison for the Japanese during the World War ¥± where thousands of men were killed and girls were mass raped. This documentary serves as a memory of a past that¡¯s soon to be forgotten, a collective memoir of the women and the horrors that continue to haunt us today.

Review

There are rumors about ghosts haunting the Red House in the Philippines. The opening scene composed of news footage, old photographs and interviews with local residents adds to the film's realism. This frame narrative is borrowed from low budget mock-documentary horror films such as The Blair Witch Project (1999). In effect, the film piques our interest and redefines horror and trauma while reflecting on the nature of media in contemporary society. The film compares real horror as a historical trauma with short-lived horror and the main interest of the horror genre. After the opening scene, the story unfolds in a traditional documentary style and presents us with individual interviews of elderly ladies from the village whose memories of the war are both personal and collective. During the Second World War, the Red House was used by the Japanese army as their fortress, where countless people were murdered and many young girls from the village were raped. Although these women continue to demand an apology and compensation from Japan, people are now more interested in the Red House as a haunted place. The film demands that we reflect on the historicity of horror and the present-day outlook on horror. [CHO Hyeyoung]
