Kurt Waldheim was a former Austrian diplomat and the United Nations Secretary General from 1972 to 1981. When he launched his election bid to become president of Austria in 1986, a wave of revelations broke about his service in the Nazi military during World War II. The Waldheim Waltz begins with footage of anti-Waldheim protests in May 1986 shot by the director with a video camera. The film presents scenes of the incidents surrounding Waldheim from the revelation of his past collaboration with the Nazis to his election as president. Despite the worldwide criticism and pressure regarding Waldheim’s past, the majority of Austrians turned a blind eye and voted for Waldheim. The director brings up the issue of Waldheim from 30 years ago, and chronicles the political controversy from a realistic and candid perspective using archive footage. You can fool all the people some of the time and some of the people all the time, but you cannot fool all the people all the time.
