Since taking in June of 2016, President Rodrigo Duterte has been waging a deadly anti-drug campaign. In the past year, police and vigilantes have reportedly killed over 7,000 people suspected of participating in the drug trade.
As soon as President Rodrigo Duterte came to power in 2016, he promised to wage a war on drugs in the Philippines. As a result, 7,000 people have died extrajudicially at the hands of the police and vigilantes. The death toll is likely to increase so long as Duterte retains his firm stance. It is implied that the problem is not just limited to the Philippines. It¡¯s a global concern based on his connection with the US government. Many of those killed on suspicion of drug possession were young people. A 16-year-old boy has lost his life. At first, the camera offers the same gaze as those gathered around the corpses on the street. Gradually, it delivers the sadness and anger of the family and takes us closer to their lives. Observing the scene after the incident, the camera is powerless. It can only put on display the sobbing family and the blood from the dead body. Yet, there is a reason why the camera should be there. The crying woman who looks into the camera and asks for help makes us desperately wish for a response from the rest of the world through this film. [KIM Sohee]
