Synopsis

It is about what lasting unfair results in Korean society have been placed by the comfort women system that was widespread across Asia during the World War II by Japan.

Review

The argument over the former comfort women is still ongoing. There are two implications for 'ongoing': one is that Japan still has not apologized properly for the comfort women issue, and the other is to shift the perspective on the issue from nationalism or paternalism to feminism. If the former is an existing perspective, the latter is a relatively recent trend. The film approaches the issue from the latter point of view and covers the comfort women for the US military and for the Korean army as well as those for the Japanese army. The comfort women for US military have been deprecated for reasons of 'spontaneity' or 'compensation' (as can be seen from the name 'foreigners' princess') compared to the damage suffered by those for the Japanese army in view of nationalism and patriarchalism, and the comfort women for South korean army are the arming presence that may justify those for Japanese army. While claiming thier existence, this film criticizes the limits of traditional view and emphasizes the necessity of feminist perspective. [KIM Jinhyuk]
