Synopsis

On the scene of youth laborer and construction site, the Korean folk tale text The Donkey Ear is overlapped. Can the relationship between the youth laborer and the construction site be turned into the relationship between the hat maker and the bamboo forest in the folk tale?

Review

As a worker who creates the outer surface of a developed society, he participates directly and physically in the development yet remains invisible. This film compares a day laborer at a construction site with a character from a folktale who works to reinforce kingship but is not given any presence or voice. His existence in the steel forest not as an individual but as a part of the labor force reminds the director of the capmaker¡¯s non-existence. Showing the laborer¡¯s life as represented by his gloves and helmet, the film focuses on the internal oppression that the capmaker or the laborer goes through. The capmaker makes an escape only when he comes to exist eternally as a ¡®speech¡¯ rather than an individual in the bamboo forest. He is at once a symbol of oppressed laborers and a paradox regarding the undefeated power of their united voices. This message is neatly and sensually summed up in this film, which makes us reflect on why folktales have been told and retold in so many different versions and why the king in the story is anxious to keep his huge ears hidden.
