Review

The stories of three Muslim women in New Delhi, India make clear the importance of liberating and training one¡¯s body when it comes to the issue of asserting a woman¡¯s voice and independence. Their accounts reveal that their ¡®home¡¯ provides a shelter where they must look after everything but their own lives. The society insists that this keeps women safe and content. Their solution is to exercise. In other words, they seek to free themselves from the manacles of family ties by faithfully following their bodily desires. Despite opposition from their husbands and in-laws, they join a nearby gym. This both directly and indirectly sets up a struggle against the outside world. The practice of training their bodies restores their voices. They learn to tell their stories, give interviews in front of the camera and even haggle with a street vendor. The women find jobs, regain their names and make new friends. Although they were only educated to live as daughters or wives before, they've found the wisdom and courage to stand up for themselves.
