The political forces of the West have associated the Muslim world with death and terrorism, and such perceptions have spread across the world. West Front sets up a border with its title alone. The film is only concerned with his conversion and fails to tell us what he used to believe in before. What matters is the existence of ‘Muslims’ as objects of fear. It is for this reason that Franck gets a special treatment at the border control upon his return. In the first part of the film, we hear about Franck’s conversion through the narration. Although the voice remains factual, we feel that it carries a certain responsibility to save a friend and deliver a shocking story. The curious camera stays close to Franck almost the whole way through, but it’s not easy to get to the bottom of his heart. He swears by his mother’s name that he’s unrelated to the underground terrorist organization and his bright eyes filled with conviction and wisdom. He is an innocent young man who is not sparing his tears. Rather than recording unrest, West Front makes us look back on the prejudice of the majority. [LEE Yongcheol]
