Synopsis

On July 12, 2006, two Israeli soldiers, Ehud Goldwasser and Eldad Regev, were kidnapped on the Lebanese-Israeli border by Hezbollah forces, triggering the Lebanon War, which lasted 34 days. Chronicle of a Kidnap follows the valiant efforts of Karnit Goldwasser, Ehud¡¯s devoted wife, and her media campaign to generate international pressure on the Israeli government to negotiate the release of her husband. She obtains incredible access to world leaders during her campaign and meets with Israeli Prime Minister Shimon Peres and French President Nicolas Sarkozy, but everyone remains silent and evasive. Her meeting with Peres is especially frustrating as the Prime Minister clearly shows the inability of the Israeli leadership to provide comfort, often remaining with only silence as his response to Goldwasser¡¯s questions. Nurit Kedar brilliantly illuminates the never-ending psychological warfare of terrorism and the government¡¯s silence behind its political motives. Do governments really protect their citizens? Are all citizens valued equally? To Karnit Goldwasser, the answers are irrelevant. On her daily bike ride to the border of Lebanon, hoping for some trace of her husband is her only chance of keeping him alive. The subjects have painful and remarkable stories to tell, and it is unfortunate that they are often buried under layers of artifice. Nonetheless, Chronicle of a Kidnap makes enough of Karnit Goldwasser¡¯s struggle to remain a moving film, and has the good sense to keep the focus at the personal level and avoid discussion of the greater Israeli-Arab conflict.
