1th DMZ Docs(2009)
I AM DOCU
Experience Korea DMZ is an exceptional journey in which 155 participants from more than 20 countries walk the 155 miles in the Demilitarized Zone, from Goseong, Gangwon-do to Paju, Gyeonggi-do, to reflect upon the meaning of peace. The 155 participants are comprised of students from various countries (including Israel and Palestine, the world’s major conflict region) and Korean college students. The five-day walk of 155 miles in the DMZ will be an opportunity to raise awareness on the importance of peace and communication. This journey also epitomizes the spirits DMZ Docs represents?peace, communication, life and co-existence.
The participants will write about their journey experience on the festival web site, providing the public with a first-hand look into the DMZ where visitor entrance is heavily guarded. The five-day walk will come to an end as they arrive at the opening ceremony. Experience Korea DMZ is planned to be further developed into the Global Peace Network. Celebrities will join the walk and talk with the participants for a special event, titled “Star Peace Join.” The participating fee is only KW 20,000, which will be entirely donated to help North Korean children.
At the DMZ Peace Tour on Bicycle, held on the sideline of the DMZ Docs, participants will ride bicycles on a new road along the civilian passage restriction line. You can enjoy the breathtaking scenery of Imjin River and watch iron fences that divide North and South Korea on a bicycle ride. The tour course includes Imjingak, Unification Bridge and the 15-kilometer-long road alongside the civilian passage restriction line. Through the tour, participants will have a chance to ponder the meaning of peace, communication, life and co-existence.
Those who want to have the tour can apply to Gyeonggi Tourism Organization. The number of participants will be limited to around 100.
Participation of various celebrities will make the tour all the more meaningful.
In the eve ceremony of DMZ Docs, various special performances will be held in the spirit of peace, communication, and life?the main themes of this festival.
Daeseong-dong, being the only South Korean town located in the Demilitarized Zone and Joint Security Area, is a specially guarded area where visitors are not allowed. The eve ceremony will be all the more meaningful because it will be the first event held in Daeseong-dong open to general public. Before the Eve Ceremony, the opening event of the Town Cinema will be held. Daeseongdong Town Cinema was built with full financial support by DMZ Docs for the town residents who have been culturally marginalized.
(★ Daeseong-dong town, located at Josan-ri, Goonnae-myeon, Paju-si, Gyeonggi-do, has mere 49 households, 198 people residing in the area. This special area is only 400 meters away from the Military Demarcation Line, one kilometer from Panmunjeom, and 11.5 kilometer from the North Korean city Gaeseong.)
Daeseong-dong Town Cinema Located on the second floor of Daeseong-dong Community Center, this town cinema seats 60 persons, is equipped with a Panasonic cinema projector, state-of-the-art audio system, a 4mx2m screen, and will be the cultural facility of the town residents who have been culturally marginalized so far.
