Maggie in Wonderland takes us on a journey, led by our protagonist Maggie, of humor and sadness through Swedish everyday life. Maggie always co-ordinates high heels with a beret, and she loves gold. In Sweden where very different realities exist side by side, Maggie moves between the seemingly open-minded world of the language courses for immigrants and the tough atmosphere of the pubs and illegal clubs in Malmö. Maggie, a fascinating personality, participates in the filming from beginning to end and is eager to show the society from her own perspective. As the camera follows Maggie for three years we get to see things from an unconventional yet candid point of view. Throughout the film, we gradually get to know Maggie.
Underneath a sofa cushion, next to a box of jewelry and knives, she keeps letters from her son in Africa. Once he was grown-up, she left him behind to seek a better life for herself in Europe, but things didn¡¯t turn out the way she had expected. This is a film about loneliness and about not being at home anywhere, a feeling a lot of people share, even if they don¡¯t share Maggie¡¯s fate. The energy and positive thinking that Maggie demonstrates throughout the film will inspire audience as well as giving hope for a better future.

The directors met at the school of documentary film-making at BiskopsArnö. They have been working closely together for four years, developing a characteristic and innovative style. Their last film, Swallow it, was an experiment that has been described as a kick in the stomach of traditional film-making. Maggie in Wonderland is their feature film debut.
