Synopsis

Ever since the Special Law of Prostitution went into effect in 2004, well known red light districts around the country began to disappear one by one. Lotte Department Store, Shinsege Department Store and Time Square were built near Yeongdeungpo Station, leaving a dangerously thin line between high-rises and the red light section of Yeongdeungpo. As these neighborhoods developed into an urban center, conflict over the closing of the red light district for the sake of cleansing the urban landscape at the government level increased. When the police began executing large scale raids from April of 2011, the regions became battlefields. Large signs were placed in the windows of various establishments and the prostitutes who worked there came out into the streets, shouting that their survival be protected. They began demanding to be acknowledged as ‘sex workers’ and not victims. The terms ‘victims of exploitation’ and ‘innocent victims’ show just how subjective the perception and understanding of these women have been. This film attempts to focus on the lives and labor of the women themselves who voluntarily provided sex for payment. It is high time that discussion of the ‘red light district’ which has been a place of survival for impoverished women be held with the lives of the women who actually provide sex labor as the main focus.
