Synopsis

When a child loses her favorite stuffed toy, most parents would probably solve the problem by buying their child a new toy that looks exactly like the lost one. But to the child, the new toy just is not “the one.” Mathilde’s way of overcoming the pain of losing her stuffed toy Lucky is not replacing it with a new toy but playing the games she used to play with Lucky to cherish the memories she created with Lucky. People often make assumptions about someone else’s feelings based on their own standards. But what may feel trivial to adults can rock a child’s world because she is feeling it for the first time ever in her whole life. Like the knick-knacks that crowd the film like props in a storeroom, the sense of loss takes on different shapes for different people, and the ways they sooth their broken hearts are also different. Mathilde, Elian and Isabel each feel their sense of loss in their own way, and talk composedly to the director about their experience. Sometimes adults try to absorb the sense of loss their children feel on their behalf, or hurriedly cover up their children’s grief with some other emotion. But perhaps the only thing you can do for your child is to view the loss through her eyes and wait for her to finish grieving. The film offers an excellent point of departure if you want to talk to your children about things they have lost. (Ji Min)
