Review

The candlelight rallies, begun in Gwanghwamun Plaza in the early winter 2016, became the important thing that is called as the biggest event since the pro-democracy movement in 1987, and that shook the Korean society. The square is the place for the big voice demanding the resignation of the government and also the field where the various voices have come out regarding sexual minorities, women, environment, youth, labor, and so on. <Candle in the Wave> is made by ten directors that had worked in the documentary project team to demand the resignation of the Park Geun-hye, and has more meaning than a simple record of the event, in that it tried to capture the various voices emanating from the square.

<Stand in the AGORA> (Kim Cheol-min) documenting the anger, ardor, shout and joy of the people crowding the square, and <A Little Closer> (Choi Jong-ho) looking carefully at the faces of everyone gathered there, focus on the spot of the square. <Chicken in the Square> (Hwang Yun) and Feminists of the candle wave protests (Kangyu Garam) remind that the square is not a place of a singular voice aiming for impeachment, change of government, and pay attention to its meaning as a place to present various topics about the life and share them. <Cleaning> (Kim Jeong-geun) and <The Blue Butterfly> (Park Moon-chil) give out the question if the square of here and now could expand its influence to other places. <The Outcry of the People> (Lee Chang-min) and <Thousand Winds> (Kim Sang-pai) are attempts to connect the inflection points of the square and the Korean history.<Who said that youth is beautiful?> (Kim Su-min) and <The Blue Whale Flies> (Hong Hyung Sook) ask what the square means for us in their own way. These ten films are currently valid, because they did not only record the events in the square like they were and compile the results, but also tried to relate a lot of questions posed in the square to our own positions in the society. For that reason, ten teams of the Media Team film-makers produced 10 videos with respective concerns and thoughts.
