Synopsis

There is Portugal, there is the Portuguese language and there is a Ukrainian filmmaker who learns the language and approaches the role of the potential migrant. The video essay is woven from the filmmaker¡¯s narration, language classes, personal videos and archival images from Kyiv – revealing the split reality of anyone who is finding a safe place abroad while longing for home, which is under the constant danger of war.

Review

This essay-film, set in Portugal, delves into the psychological impact of war on people, allowing us to gauge the effects of war within the director's personal experience of time. As the director studies Portuguese and compares the similarities and differences with Ukrainian while reflecting on their inner thoughts during the language learning process, these musings unfold through a vulnerable narration. This narration, in a voice still finding its tone, conveys the director's sense of solitude in an unfamiliar environment. This emotion connects with the loneliness of those displaced from their homeland, like the Ukrainians abroad, and those in their homeland enduring the uncertain times of war—two distant periods intertwined. The process of learning a new language gradually expands from its initial scenes to encompass the time of war, where the Ukrainians, uprooted from their land, intimately confront the battlefield.
