Synopsis

13 years after his civil service in a hospital in Thiès, Senegal, Paul challanges his memories and traumas. With old video footage, interviews and animations he questions his role as a volunteer within the German system of development aid.

Review

Red Ears is about the time director Paul Drey spent at a hospital in Thiès, Senegal. The film is based on footage he filmed during his stay and interviews with voices of Senegalese women. The view from the exotic hospital and some of the collaborative activities with German NGOs are reproduced in animations. The well-intended service for public interest unintentionally gets distorted and reveals the absurdity of power and hierarchy within the global value system of development and aid. The film contrasts the director¡¯s personal experience of younger days with Western development aid policy to point out the problems in the first world¡¯s view toward the third world.
