Synopsis

This woman features the story of an ordinary woman who, at the age of 35, lost the job that she had for the previous ten years. Upon the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, she returned to hometown from Beijing to find ways of living for herself, her parents, and her child. In an effort to pursue everyday life, she navigated different intimate relationships and embarked on a journey of self-exploration.

Review

Beibei leaves the real estate industry after 10 years of service and tries to get away from the ideal image of a woman. She lives with a non-caring husband, a young daughter, and her mother, and she doesn¡¯t feel guilty about leaving her daughter to her old mother and cheating on a young man. Without any obsession with romantic love, she cheats to maintain her everyday life and communicates with the affair to go against the required gender role. This Woman takes a structure with a vague border and creates a unique narrative by mixing together bourgeois melodrama about cheating and observational documentary forms. As a film director and an artist, Alan Zhang profoundly asks how women¡¯s life is stimulated and institutionalized and what rules and expectations dominate their life in contemporary society. In the epilogue, Zhang interviews Beibei and asks, ¡°What would you do if your world collapses after your family and friends watch this film?¡± and Beibei answers, ¡°I will tell them it was all fake.¡± The film alternately combines reenactment drama and interview with this woman, who analyzes and contemplates her problems in front of the camera. This way, the audience gets free from the question of whether it describes the actual life of Beibei.
