Review

The Worst Ones is a social impact film that makes audiences think. The key lies in the antinomy of creativity. The film is set in the suburban area of Boulogne-sur-Mer in northern France and its story focuses on the process of making a film about a pregnant teenage girl named Lily and her brother named Ryan by Belgian director, Gabriel. In casting the actor, Gabriel tries to find a problem child who can express the hardship of the character vividly, but he faces an ethical crisis due to the superficial attitude in the middle of actual life and fiction. Director Romane Gueret and Lise Akoka go beyond the vague line between fiction and reality and ask questions on the hypocritical aspect of making a film that depends on devotion by other people. The film uses a non-actor who is cast on the spot to obtain deep sincerity and skillfully adopts familiar interview settings to make the audiences keep thinking as they watch the film. The Worst Ones breaks away from the boring format and proficiently manipulates the perception of the audience to maintain moderation between process and content. At the same time, the film¡¯s heartbreaking story of working-class children also leaves a positive and touching spirit to life at the end.
