Synopsis

Made over 6 years, Your Fat Friend charts the rise of writer and activist Aubrey Gordon from anonymous blogger to NYTimes best selling author and podcaster. Her aim - a paradigm shift in the way we see fat people in the world & the fat on our own bodies. Her work has brought her an ardent audience & threats to her life. By far, her biggest challenge is getting her parents to hear her. A film about fatness, family, the complexities of change & the deep, messy feelings we hold about our bodies

Review

In February 2016, an anonymous blogger uploaded a posting titled ¡°A Request from Fat Friend,¡± and it became a sensation. The posting about the weakness of fat people captivated a documentary director, Jeanie Finlay. Your Fat Friend is a witty documentary directed by Finlay focusing on Aubrey Gordon, the main character, author, social media influence, and fat activist. Gordon¡¯s second book, You Just Need to Lose Weight aroused sympathy and pointed out common misunderstandings about weight, body, and health. Her book was sensational for showing the reality of fat people who live in a world designed unfavorably for them. In the film, a lot of scenes hit the nail of emotions that many people have. For example, there are scenes where Gordon suffers from hateful comments and asks readers to just say ¡°You are fat,¡± instead of trying to put it mildly. The film uses personal stories to talk about the significant issue, and it also describes Gordon¡¯s journey by associating with her divorced parents. The pain of living as a fat woman, fat people¡¯s reasons for being fat, and their struggles to change the world full of prejudice are well-organized in the film based on the axis of the parent-child relationship as the emotional driving force.
