The camera starts its journey from a dense bamboo forest and roams through the city. The wandering gaze remains restless, causing the forms of subjects within the frame to blur. Experimental filmmaker zonpilone sends Kambayashi Akio's reminiscences over these gradually abstracting images. Just like the title suggests, Kambayashi was born in Gunsan in 1938, spent 7 years there, and was then forcibly deported to Japan. However, this process can't be summarized in just a sentence. Can we truly expect the memories of a 7-year-old boy who witnessed the city reduced to ashes upon arriving in Japan without any particular circumstances? As the film progresses, the camera that was wandering the streets disappears, replaced by old photographic images. But Kambayashi's voice continues. The retrospective, recorded multiple times, feels somewhat fragmented, perhaps as if it's speaking to a diverse audience. However, it conveys an incredible level of detail that official historical records can't capture. It includes experiences of leaving one's hometown, drifting through Asia, and a belief in the fractured modernity of Asia due to colonization and the Cold War. Born in Gunsan and After Seven Years, I Was Repatriated to Japan... is a dedicated effort to preserve the layers of memory that a person holds. For those who earnestly listen and explore these layers, it could become an experience of deciphering the hidden threads of history.
