Two lifelong rivals Ratima and Kalima have been appointed caretakers of their empty village. Now in the twilight of their lives, they must forget their past and help each other survive a long and harsh winter.
Winter in the highlands of Nepal, specifically in the Dhor Valley, is harsh. Relentless cold and heavy snowfall are a constant, leading residents to leave for the south starting in late autumn. Taking care of empty houses and abandoned livestock during the long winter falls to Kalima and Ratima. Their lives are filled with contentment and irony. Born in the same region, raised in the same social class, and even having shared the same husband, they were inevitable rivals. However, with their husband's passing and as they enter old age, they find themselves almost each other's sole conversational partners and collaborators, facing the reality that they cannot avoid. The two young directors who spent the winter with the two elderly women to complete No Winter Holidays do not hastily delve into the intricate lives nor hastily craft a narrative. Instead, they visually portray the rhythm of the daily lives of the two elderly women as they navigate isolation and anxiety through the barren reality of life and the metaphorical landscape of winter. The distancing of the camera, which allows contemplation of the unspoken gaps between words and actions, is particularly striking as it doesn't invade the characters' lives but also keeps the viewers engaged. This work offers glimpses of respect for others' lives and a critical awareness of Nepalese society.
