Twilight of a Life is a fascinating and optimistic journey of a mother aged 95, and her son, the director. Against all odds, she decided not to surrender to the pessimistic diagnosis of the doctors. She remains alive and through the magic presence of the camera, she is giving us, amazing teachings about life. A film that touches and gives hope to everyone. Twilight of a Life is a unique document that proves that ¡®Old Age¡¯ can be approached without fear, with humor and tenderness!
A mother and a son perform a pas de deux together.
Without presenting stereotype, the film shows the son spending several days with his 95-year-old mother who is dying but still alive. The dance is performed by their hands and their singing and enjoying life is on the black and white screen with classical melody.
As the original title Twilight of a Life says, people treat those people on the verge of death different than usual. For instance, people face the old in a solemn way or serious way, in plain words, in disguise. But in this film, the son treats her 95-year-old mother very casually.
The mother and the son have honest talks. In the opening sequence, the films shows that he is allowed to direct this film by his mother. The mother, asking if there is anyone can count how many days left till one¡¯s death, keeps smoking, portraying ¡®now¡¯ and talking about the ¡®future.¡¯
The mother and the son hold each other¡¯s hands for the dance while repeatedly say this caress is a kind of language and a hand is sensual, which sounds philosophical. However, although she is alive, the mother says there is calling. To the mother talking about life while expecting death, the son says he loves her which satisfies his mother.
The film is such a masterpiece presenting twilight of life of ours waiting for Godot who won¡¯t come forever. The son was another man of philosophy reciting Jacques Brel¡¯s chanson like a wondering minstrel. [Koh Gwang-ae]
