Searching for who I am is a life-long journey. Everyone goes on her own journey throughout life. So does Ky, who is 12 years old and living in Netherlands. However, Ky’s journey is a bit special, which began from Ky’s trouble with the gender identity. Ky was named ‘Kyara’ when she was born as a girl. As growing, Ky has realized she/he is a boy. Ky with a new name ‘Niels’ wants to start a new life. What is good for Ky/Niels is that his parents understand his new identity. In school, he plays soccer with boys and uses a boy’s dressing room. However, teasing from other boys is inevitable. For Ky/Niels with this situation, Sterre is a congenial friend. Sterre, who was born as a boy, considers himself as a girl. Ky and Sterre are so intimate who understand and empathize with each other. The Netherlands is the first country in the world to legalize same-sex marriage in 2001. Even in this country where the awareness on human rights of LGBT is advanced, the life of sexual minority is not easy. In South Korea where understanding on sexual minority is poor, transgender and gender dysphoria is unfamiliar terms. Moreover, when we see Ky’s playful laugh and tears, we gets confused between femininity and masculinity. However, whatever it is, we find ourselves to send support and our best wish for Ky or Niels who is honest to himself/herself. [Kimgo Yeon-ju]
