My little brother Yeongjae, 7 years old, is 11 years younger than me. He is growing child but has grown too much. Recently my biggest worry is nothing but my brother¡¯s obesity. Parents and I had a number of arguments about how we nurture him. However, since I live separately at school dormitory, my opinion has been ignored easily as if I were not a member of the family. Why did he become chubby? For this, I had some meaningful talks with our family.
A quick-witted audience may have noticed. Shallow Kim is a work about obesity. The oldest sister concerning her youngest brother¡¯s obesity holds a camera to shoot everyday life of the family that she thinks as responsible for brother¡¯s obesity. It¡¯s not like an observational camera seen from documentary or entertainment programs in mass media which close the story with overreacted laughs and proper advice. Its material and form are same, but the eyes upon the target being filmed are different. In context, the family¡¯s everyday life and laughs in Shallow Kim are very pleasant and healthy. The most impressive thing was those scenes of detailed conversations and situations of the family. Even for ordinary and predictable questions, their conversations reveal the family¡¯s particular atmosphere. But it can¡¯t be light forever. On the part of director¡¯s concern on her brother, her own situation is located for spending less time with the family and therefore her disappointment and guilty conscience. However, physical separation from the family is natural thing during one¡¯s growth. The sister and brother are being together in their growth. What is important thing is that the eyes watching each other are based on affection and faith, not as a target with problems to improve. Without special cinematic device or event, the power of this film makes the audience to grow and cheer themselves. [Lee Hye-rin]

Shallow Kim (2016) Owing to the big trouble I had: my brother¡¯s obesity, I was lucky to have a chance to reflect myself who had become a stranger to my family. Through my documentary film, I want to openly tell you what I realized during the filming about ¡®family¡¯, and show you our family affection as full as our BMI.
