My memory follows the traces of my father. When I get worn out from chasing memories, my father's past fills me.
Essay begins with narration saying ¡®it is a story of helpless farewell and of proud showing of the man within my mind.¡¯ Father died. His sudden death is hardly proud for himself. Son asks himself how he will remember of the father. He holds a camera and traces back to his father¡¯s past in everyday space. The space shows a vacuum. In order to remember the one who left, the screen looks for something, take it within and then empties again. A person¡¯s existence and absence in a space are linked with him in the memories of other people. The son visits other people to hear about his father, but their stories are remembered all differently according to the time they met. Memories about one person are created all differently. In this process, oddly, non-smooth shooting seems to be the son¡¯s emotional flow, not his technical insufficiency. Questions get complicated. How do I want to remember him? He never finds an answer. There left another question ¡®The man I don¡¯t know, the man I will meet, can I love him?¡¯ Not with the hasty understand nor reconciliation, the question of this clumsy and unsure protagonist feels even stronger. Now the title Essay gets close to me. Right. This is not a story for a fixed form or answer. That is why it feels real. [Lee Hye-rin]
