Review

One of the meaningful features of After Breaking the Silence is that the workers recorded their stories with a camera themselves. They prove their own existence through the voice without face away from the camera. I'd like to quote a scene in the film. The union members sit around the boss's office in a circle and demonstrate in immobilization. "Boss, Mr. Shin Youn-sub, give a bonus. You drove us too hard like dogs, should you give a bonus?" said a voice, from the camera showing the floor. The boss, who stood by and heard them, says a word, "I don't give a bonus to dogs." Another member protestingly raises his voice. "Are we dogs?"

This scene reminds of a scene from the feature film Inside Men that I watched a few days ago. The chief editor of editorials Lee Gang-hee said at the scene, "Anyway the people are dogs and pigs. They yelp for a while, and will soon become quiet." The famous saying has been the word on everybody's lips under the pretext of its satirical point. But It was on the tip of the Director General for Planning of the Education Ministry, and he explained himself in a controversy that he had quoted the saying from the film.

The scene in After Breaking the Silence, quoted above, reflects the frustration, which we feel when the comment to criticize a wrong reality could be abused for preserving the reality, recognizing it or being resigned to it. In the first scene, the director separates the words from the face of the workers that sit in front of the camera. This could perhaps show the desperate situation of which they can neither say nor keep silence. [Kim So-hui]
