The women prisoners from different regions in Mexico with the illiteracy rate closer to 80 percent, because they spoke different languages, they could not communicate with each other in the prison. Having learned a common language together in the rehabilitation programs of prison, they exchange letters after release from prison. These women, who found their voice toward the world, reflect the painful past memories of their being excluded from society with emotion in their writing. The close friendship and heartwarming solidarity among women.
This bright, healthy and happy film takes its power completely from protagonist women. The prison cell these women are in becomes a cause for them to escape from the prison carved within them. Paradoxically, only after they are imprisoned, the discrimination the society invisibly put upon and the reality of illiteracy the society produced become visible problems to solve. As these women learn how to read and write, they win a tool to express their hidden emotion. They write their own history and experience the liberation. They even look more proud. They start dreaming. Baking, becoming a lawyer to protect the weak, traveling, becoming a poet, dreams vary widely. These are all created by learning how to read and write.
We easily forget that words are basic tools to explain ourselves and understand. Also that tool is necessary to improve our potential capability. Because, it is a power to take our limited time, space to the past, the future and the imaginary space beyond the earth. In the film, Mexican women realize how natural it is to affirm herself and to think herself bigger based on the asset of learning character language. Another observation on beauty of walking free and proud in living makes us feel happy for the liberation. [Chai Hee-sook]
