Synopsis

Cateura, a small slum village in Paraguay, South America, is located in a huge landfill. The people make living out of picking up the garbage. Nicholas GÓMEZ, one of those who make living by selling junks, makes musical instruments with cans and plastics found in the garbage. Fabio CHÁVEZ, the musician teaches children how to play the recycled instruments. The children whose lives seemed to be stuck in the poverty, organize an orchestra and start to find dream and happiness. As their music gather world-wide attention through Youtube with the phrases like, ¡®Beautiful music in the garbage in the rubbish heap¡¯ and ¡®Inspiring melody made from garbage¡¯, they get to perform abroad and this film captures their days. The landscape of the huge landfill that dominates the village scene overwhelms the viewer. The recycled instruments made from the landfill, the children playing them and most of all, their music are magical. Landfill Harmony captures various layers of the village such as ecology, environment, the growth of the children and local community through the hardship, change and hope the village goes through.
