Showing postwar European history through director’s own family history, this documentary is familiar but at the same time, experimental. The director pays attention to the word ‘Felvidek’ while she points out her own family and relatives to portray the relationship between Hungary and Slovakia. The word indicates the border between Hungary, Slovakia and Ukraine, currently non-existent, also means ‘hybrid’, in a negative way. The director draws the potrait of ‘Slovagarian’, a fusion of Hungary and Slovakia blended in multiple ways like family history, language, and culture as the war muddled territories. Approaching in private route, the film uses objet animation, found footage and collage of torn photo pieces to imprint fragmented national history and memories. And then, it questions again 50 years after the 2nd World War. “What exactly happened?,” “How did minor political choices transform many lives?” and “Who am I?”. In order to visualize invisible memories, traces, ethnic group issues and their wounds, the film emotionally mixes animation techniques with actual images and documentary techniques along with symptomatic sounds. As the war generation is fading away, it is time for the next generation who remember the war by records to look back history again. Only with facing and questioning, we can escape from ‘oblivion’ and ‘repetition’ of the history and I believe that is what documentary films do with importance. (LEE Seung-min)
