It could be uneasy to watch a documentary of people living in jjokbangchon or the homeless drifting around Seoul station. What can be done to help those in poverty with no hopes of a breakthrough? One can ponder; maybe there is self-guilt from abandoning social responsibility and simply watching someone struggle from a comfortable distance. Hide Behind the Sun makes the audience observe the jjokbangchon life with mixed bittersweet emotions. Director Chang-jun Lee captures the raw real footage of the jjokbangchon people. Lee shows the daily life of four men. The Jjokbangchon ringleader Sang-hyun, Jung-sun a heavily tattooed big softy who is eagerly waiting to die, Bok-su who gets drunk and passes out in the streets, and Jin-tae who works in a charity trying to grasp hope for life. The film puts their tiresome repetitive lifecycle side by side with the colorful landscape of Seoul. Once a great community with good neighbors is disappearing due to scarce employment opportunities, redevelopment craze and jjokbangchon remodeling projects. In the midst of conglomerate shopping malls, fancy neon signs and the busy passer-by in the heart of Seoul, the jjokbangchon seems to repel like a mixture of water and oil. The aid from the church and charities fails to give any practical help. The media broadcast and Christian missionary work also fails to truly remedy their lives. Hide Behind the Sun forms a striking contrast between a town with no hope and the vibrant but expressionless landscape of a metropolis. The two spaces draw a dreary parallel line. The compromise of the ringleader Sang-hyun who works in an organizations run by Seoul and the church draws dreariness likewise. (PARK Hye-mi)
