Asia Swany shuts down its ski glove factory in Iksan in 1989. Most of the workers there are young women who had to work to support their family. It wasn’t realistic for them to carry on with their studies while working under such harsh conditions and they form a labor union as they become more aware of the irrational labor environment. Around this time, they receive a sudden notice of the company’s shutdown from the headquarters in Japan. They take over the building and begin to boycott, but when there are no signs of a settlement being reached, four women laborers decide to leave for Japan to fight. This movie intersects documented footage of their 100 days of struggle in Japan and the present day of these women who recall those moments. Although ultimately not a complete victory, this movie is filled with optimistic energy rather than defeatism. It does not simply show the dogmatic process of innocent young girls transforming into laborers but rather creates a world formed by the vitality of young women and the spirit of laborers. Most importantly, the various ways that Koreans who reside in Japan and Japanese citizens respond to their spirit illustrate with warmth and not indifference the process of their struggle and the movie’s perspective as it recalls those times. Their 100 days prove the idealistic yet rare truth that people can respond with sincerity to others that they have no vested interest in despite nationality and language differences. (NAM Da-eun)
