Gulu Village is perched on the edge of a tall mountain cliff in Sichuan Province, China. In such a high and rugged location, enveloped in clouds when it rains, this place which is sometimes called ¡°the rim of the sky¡± is an isolated, cut-off world. The only educational institution in this place is the Gulu Elementary School with 54 students, and the only teacher is Shen, a native villager who has no teaching certificate but who has taught children here for more than two decades. With no electricity or television, this place that resembles an earth-bound paradise undergoes great changes when Bao, a university student from the city, comes to visit them as a volunteer. Gulu Elementary School, which received exposure in the media and monetary donations after the Sichuan Earthquake, witnesses a front-on collision between the traditional teaching methods adhered to by Shen and the extemporaneous, free teaching style introduced by Bao. The older generation Shen who has no formal teaching certification, but possesses years of experience, and the ambitious newgeneration education major Bao go through endless conflict and confrontation. Bao introduces electricity to the village, and shows the children television programs through a computer. With the donated funds, construction is started on an expansion of the school, and the villagers who take part in the construction and earn more money have their voices heard as well. Even in this towering place called the rim of the sky, the great wave of urbanization or modernization strikes without fail, and through the protagonists of Shen and Bao this film faithfully depicts this opposition and conflict.
