Our Last Tango sheds light on the 50-plus-year partnership between the legendary tango dancer María Nieves REGO and Juan Carlos COPES as lovers and colleagues in the art. The film creates a poetic ambiance as it threads different levels of a story. On the level of the reality, Maria tells her story to the two couples of actors and actresses who are going to act María and Juan. And the story is represented as the beautiful scenes of María and Juan from their youth and middle age. The video record of María and Juan dancing the tango is projected occasionally. From when they were young to the moment they met after they got old–all of these are not only the history of the couple but the part of tango history. The relationship between María and Juan was never easygoing. They broke up as a couple, feeling hatred instead of love, but they still danced together as tango dancers. What did they feel when they dance? It could not be simply described because, in the steps of tango, various human emotions can be delivered–love, passion, dream, hatred, loneliness, forgiveness, and many more. But there is the moment those emotions also go away. In a video of a performance in which María is filmed dancing with a shadow, she pushes the shadow away. Another break-up in the relationship with art. She confesses the agony and pain of the parting, but she thinks the pain is essential in life. This aspect of life touched through the medium of tango: it seems to be more elegant, not just a luxury of the artists, because it is the emotion that we all share as a human. (PARK Young-seok)
