An art exhibition displaying the works of a photographer is held. Yet, the photographer himself is absent. Rather, his presence is felt in his photographs full of passion. The visitors to the exhibition dance and recite poetry. Just like the photographer’s search for something other than ‘glamorous things’, the director hopes to delve into the artist’s memories from the past. The film traces the life of photographer KIM Young-soo using first-person point of view. Along the way, there are glimpses of the relationship between the director and KIM Young-soo, and we are invited to consider some philosophical questions about photography. Through interviews, the first part of the film focuses on the way KIM Young-soo is introduced to the art of photography and soon finds himself in the middle of the avant-garde movement throughout the 70s and 80s. The middle and last parts of the film are dedicated to the director’s journey to find photographer KIM Young-soo. We learn of KIM Young-soo past efforts to take ‘essential and permanent photographs that permeate deep into us’, his protégée JUNG In-suk, and the reason why KIM and the director take photographs. In a way, the film functions like a developing solution that makes invisible things visible. (OH Jung-hun)
