First Dance, a documentary shot in the USA over a very short period of time, is the wedding video of Sunmin and Lauren, a Lesbian couple. The film begins two days before the wedding and goes on to chronicle the whole process. On the surface, this wedding video is not vastly different from any other couple¡¯s. Firstly, we obesrve how they make preparations for the wedding and then listen to their stories, and witness the blessings they receive from their friends and family. However, throughout this brief recording, there is a fundamental message about the issue of homosexual marriages. Watching the couple¡¯s wedding, we are invited to join in Sunmin and Laurren¡¯s special rite of passage. The film starts with the charming couple¡¯s interview, taken in Boston¡¯s Public Garden, which is home to the much loved lesbian swan couple. As a couple approaching their wedding, Sunmin and Lauren are taking the usual steps of picking their wedding dresses, receiving skin care and practicing surprise performances. With refreshing honesty and courage, they reveal in their interview the history of how they first met and began dating. In a calm and orderly way, they explain the reason why they want to get married, the meaning of life and what they hope to achieve in the future. Although their voices remain cheerful and confident throughout, they do not try to hide the trials and tribulations that they¡¯ve had to endure. They hold a Jewish wedding on a beach in Provincetown, a vacation town in the east coast of the USA. Sunmin¡¯s parents refuse to attend the wedding in the end. Yet, with love and support of their friends and special encouragement from Lauren¡¯s mother, who long ago accepted and embraced her daughter¡¯s homosexuality, the wedding runs smoothly. The event that recognizes and accepts differences proves to be a new experience for the wedding guests, not to mention for Sunmin and Lauren. Their ¡®first dance¡¯ is a signal for many others to start dancing happily. (KIM Dong-hyun)
