Living in this worldly society among crowds of people, we willingly encounter wanderers on the street. Located in the market square at the heart of Noailles, Marseille is Mon Bar, a place of refuge for a range of people including macho seamen who are only staying on land temporarily, bar hostesses who strike up shortlived relationships with them, a middle-aged man who recalls a Mafia boss in Marseille, an old gentle who longs to return home in Russia and Charles Bronson. Just like in John Ford’s films, these nameless men arrive from beyond the horizon and interact with strangers in the bar, dancing and drinking together. The camera moves from presenting a panoramic view of the vast sea surrounding Marseille to focusing intensely on the visitors at Mon Bar along with the philosopher-like middle-aged gentleman. The sequence at the bar, filled with transcendental scenes that almost purify absent spaces, is a self-portrait of Marseille and the submerged cathedral. This beautiful and sorrowful hymn draws forth the power of inebriety from banal everyday existence, which is enough to stimulate sensory nerves of images.
