When a French film Far from Vietnam was shown in the United States at the New York Film Festival, the U.S. reaction was more significant than the French. At the time Americans were in self-denial of the nasty war in Vietnam. On the other hand, the French were rather objectively viewing the loss at the battle of Dien Bien Phu. During that time, France had some sort of Maoism in the presence of Sartre’s total intellectual. Physical distance from Vietnam relieved the French and also forced the intellectuals to concern what was happening there. As the tension arose, they felt grief and led protests of 1968. The Vietnam War impacted artists; made GODARD and TRUFFAUT take over Cannes film festival and New Wave Cinema come alive from all around the world. This film was directed by 7 directors and mainly filmed by one of them, Joris IVENS. If he took the visual arts part, Chris MARKER kept his writer-istic enchantment to keep the film wholesome. Young at that time, GODARD maintained his own experimental style from Dziga Vertov’s value of film grammar. As we see, Far from Vietnam shows multiple directors’ statements. One most impressive scene is the Vietnamese building trenches without any sign of fear but fierce bravery. Even though Vietnamese casualty was dozen times higher than the U.S.’s fifty thousands, they won. Charming attribute of the film is right there; it shows how they got to win the war. (PARK Bu-sik)
